Spalding RFC 1st xv 37 v Grimsby RFC 1st xv 0
Spalding returned to winning ways with a comprehensive victory over a Grimsby side which only threatened their superiority on rare occasions writes Brian Stray.
The fact that they were missing several first choice players was a significant, positive factor in their quest to gain promotion and to indicate that they have strength in sufficient depth to survive at a higher level. Jim Williams, at scrum half this week opened the scoring with a penalty from in front of the Grimsby posts as Grimsby incurred the displeasure of the referee. And more was to come with a fine try by newcomer Norm Patterson who took advantage of ball won from a scrummage taken against the head. Jamie Anthony, at fly-half, made the break and the centre used pace and power to leave the visitors’ defence in disarray as he touched down near the posts. Williams confidently converted and Town were on their way. A further converted try, scored by Anthony whose running proved too strong for the opposition came within minutes and it seemed that the visitors were in for a torrid afternoon.
But to their credit, they kept Town at bay until the closing minutes of the half when winger Ryan Chappell was put into space by his fellow three-quarters and he made no mistake with the touchdown wide of the posts. The conversion missed its mark.
Spalding continued to have the dominance in the second period but some of the urgency had disappeared from their approach and mistakes in handling and choice of options became more common. The time spent in opposition territory was significant however and the try on the 60 minute mark was unique. Jim Williams took advantage of good possession and kicked ahead into the Grimsby dead ball area. Kyle Bratt, following up, forced the visiting full back to make a hash of his attempted clearance and Williams in pursuit found the ball in his hands for the simplest of touchdowns. His conversion attempt from wide out failed. It was a day for the three-quarters to add their name to the score sheet but much credit must go to the forwards who against a heavier pack, managed to provide an ample supply of possession both in the tight and the line-out where Mark Haighton had the better of his opposite number. Chappell added his second score of the afternoon receiving the ball with still much to do but outpacing the defence to add a further five points to the total. And it was the left to his opposite winger, George Brown to add the final score of the afternoon, out manoeuvring the defence to score in the corner. The victory was well deserved but there will be harder tasks ahead if Town are to achieve their goal.
